Water of Life
I would like you to think of a time in the future, where fresh drinking water has become scarce. People world wide are dying from thirst. Water trades at a ridiculous price which only the rich can afford. Those who can not afford the drinking water have to contend with trying to survive on small amounts of filthy contaminated water that can still be found sometimes when digging deep into the old river beds.
Suddenly, in your backyard, a spring of pure, fresh, drinkable water suddenly gushes forth. It is life itself that has sprung up in your backyard, and you have total control over it, for it is contained in your property. The spring is never ending and as much water as is ever needed is gushing out. What do you do?
1) Do you hide the fact that you have fresh water available in case everyone else comes and takes of it? It is yours and you do not like sharing.
2) Do you immediately sense a good profit to be made, and start to sell the water to those who are able to afford it? Maybe you set a price a little below the market price to make it a little more affordable and to make yourself feel a little better.
3) You allow those who are able to come and get water themselves, to come and take freely.
4) You start to make plans to be able to distribute the water to all around, ensuring that those who are unable to fetch the water themselves, such as the elderly, the widows and the orphans get enought water to survive. Life is important and you wish to freely give as much life as possible to those to whom you are able.
Such is the word of God. It is the living water that springs up as a fountain inside of us. John 4:14 "But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." It is sad that so many people treat the living waters the same as they would if that spring of water had come up in their backyard. Many choose options 1 and 2 above, but few choose options 3 and 4.
James 1:22 "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." Do not keep the water to yourselves, but go out and spread the news, that you have the living waters inside of you, and that whoever drinks of these living waters shall never thirst again, but will have their own fountain of living water starting to gush up from within them, through Jesus Christ who comes to live inside of you.
The fountain of life that is within you, can only spring up as much fresh new water, as that which you give out. Imagine a bottle of water. The water in that bottle will grow old and stale if you do not use it . However if you constantly use the water, and refill it from the fountain, then the water will always be fresh and sweet.
If you thirst for the water of life and have never tasted the sweet refreshing water from the fountain, then ask the fountain of life, Jesus to come into your life today, so that you may never thirst again.
