Old Testament

Is the Old Testament still relevant to us today? Is it something that we should bother with as it can be quite boring to read although in some places there are some good stories? Should you, being a new testament christian, washed with the blood of Jesus, worry about the laws of the old testament?

The answer to all three questions above is ,"Yes, the old Testament is as relevant to us today as it was thousands of years ago." Although we have been excluded from certain consequences and certain rituals of the old testament, through the works of Jesus and the blood of Jesus, the foundation of the new testament and our very lives was in the old testament. A christian who does not bother to read or know the contents of the old testament is one who has no foundation or strength!

When Jesus went out into the wilderness and was tempted by Satan, He was weak from hunger for He had not eaten for forty days. Satan came to Him in His weakest moment, but yet Jesus was able to resist and overcome satan. How did Jesus do this?

Jesus quoted scripture from the old testament and more importantly the scripture that He quoted to satan all came from the book known as the book of law - Deuteronomy.

The first scripture was Deut 8:3 "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God".

The second scripture, Deut 6:16 "You shall not tempt the Lord your God".

The third scripture, Deut 6:13 " You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve."

Through the knowledge of these three scriptures from the old testament, Jesus overcame the tempter and he had to flee from before Him. Many of the old testament scriptures were used by the apostles in the book of Acts and in the letters thereafter.

The old testament is the foundation on which we stand, and therefore it is our strength. The foundation supplies strength to a building and a house built on a solid foundation will not fall. However a house that has no foundation is soon swept away when troubled times come. I have witnessed many a christian overcome and swept away as soon as a few hard times come, for there has been no solid foundation in their lives.

In order to build strength into your christian walk and to build a solid foundation into your life, one that will withstand all the wiles of satan, and against which no weapon shall prosper, entrench yourself in the knowledge of the old testament, for it is as relevant to you today as it was 2000 years ago.

Fear The Lord

Fear of the Lord God has been lost in this modern society of ours. The fear of the Lord is the great mechanism that holds a nation together and leads it into righteousness and blessings. When the fear of the Lord is removed, the nation breaks apart and drifts into into sin of every description and decay and destruction follow.

The church is partly to blame for some of the erroneous teachings that have spread through the world. These teachings are teachings such as that the Old Testament is no longer applicable to our new generation, because of Jesus. They also add that the Love is Jesus is so great that it covers every sin. This is true, but not to the extent that it has become to be believed by all and sundry.

The love of Jesus will cover any sin that you repent of and confess to. It will not cover sins that are openly committed with the belief of "Oh well, Jesus will forgive me anyway!" Sin is dirt in God's eye and He can not stand sin. God and Jesus are the same and therefore, although Jesus is quick to forgive and true to forgive you, unrepented sin is dirt in their eye and can bring forth judgement and wrath from God.

Deuteronomy 10:12 "And now Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul."

The New Testament is built upon the old testament and has the old testament as a foundation. When viewing the old testament, it is viewed through the cross of Jesus and only where the work of Jesus specifically negates something from the old testament , does the item become crossed out in the old testament, and that also only to him who has accepted the Jesus as his Lord and Saviour and who recognises the work of Jesus.

Deuteronomy 10:12 above says that you must fear the Lord. Nothing that Jesus has done negates this commandment, and so therefore it stands as strong today as it did thousands of years ago. Losing the fear of God allows the doorway of sin to open. This nation has lost the fear of God and has become a nation of iniquity. With the iniquity comes the curses of deuteronomy 28.

One of the biggest concerns in modern times, amongst all nations is the spread of cancer and other disease. Cancer stood at a mere one person in a hundred who stood a chance to get cancer in the early 1900's. It is now estimated that one in three will get cancer, and even that figure is getting closer to one in two. Why? Because this nation has lost the fear of God and the curses of God are upon the nations. Look at Deuteronomy 28:27. This verse that describes some of the results of disobedience to God, specifically lists the tumours.

Now please, I am not saying that you have cancer because you do not fear God. There are many different reasons why cancer can be found in your body. However, this is a prime example of the evidence that the loss of the fear of God in the nation will lead to death and destruction of that nation.

Pray for our nations of the world today, that they will return to being God fearing nations who love the lord their God with all their might and all their heart and who set out to serve Him first, that the blessings of God may return to the nations and all will see His glory.
