The Baptism in Water of Jesus

Jesus was baptised in water by John the Baptist at the river of Jordan. The story of the baptism in water of Jesus is taught to us in Matthew 3 from verse 13 to verse 17. Why was there a need for Jesus to be baptised in water? The symbolism of water baptism is that you die to yourself in going under the water and you then rise up a new creation in Christ, so then why was Jesus, who was Christ, rise up in himself?

John was famous for his cry in the wilderness "Repent and be baptised, for the kingdom of God is at hand." Many came to John and were baptised by him in water. They repented of their sins and were baptised. We know that Jesus was without sin and therefore did not need to repent. The water baptism was not to wash away His sins as there were none, and it was not for Him to rise up a new creation into himself. So why did Jesus have need to be baptised in water by John. When John himself pointed this out to Jesus, Jesus replied in verse 15, "Permit it to be so now, for thus is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness."

So then why was Jesus baptised in water? The baptism of water for Jesus was a turning point in His life here on earth. Up until the day that He was baptised in water, although Jesus was an extraordinary person, He lived the life as an ordinary person, a carpenter who went to work daily and plied His craft around the cities. Jesus was not yet noted as being the Messiah or the Christ.

John 7:5 opened my eyes to this fact. "For even his brothers did not believe in Him". Up until this time, thirty years after His birth and thirty years after all the great prophecies revealed to Mary and Joseph and the wise men, Jesus had lived as an ordinary man. Even His own brothers did not believe that he was anything other than a great and loving big brother. Now the time had come for Jesus to step out of His role as an ordinary person and into the role of being "The Christ, The son of the Living God".  The Baptism in water of Jesus was the marking of dying to the former image and rising up as the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Baptism in water in our own lives is just as relevant to us as it was to Jesus. We get baptised in water to mark a turning point in our lives. When we decide that we are going to stop serving and being a slave to sin, and to change our lives and accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour and be bonded in the love of Jesus, we get baptised in water by full submersion in order to die to our old ways and to rise up out of the water a new creation through Christ Jesus.

If you have never been through water baptism by complete submersion as an adult person who is capable of making decisions and is capable of repenting, then I would like to tell you that it is a life changing experience. Infant Baptism is not what is taught in the bible, as a child can not make a decision to change their lives or repent. Repent therefore, and be baptised in water for the remission of sins.

Breaking the Traditions Of Infant Baptism.

Infant Baptism is a practise that is carried out in many churches till this day. A child is taken to the church and the priest or minister dedicates the child to Jesus and sprinkles holy water upon the head of the infant. This procedure is usually carried out on babies and infants who are under the age of 1 year old , but can also be carried out on older children.

An infant water baptism ceremony

Whilst this is a great practise and serves to dedicate your child to the Lord, infant baptism is not Baptism as defined in the Bible.

Baptism is one of the most important procedures that you undergo in your Christaian walk. The more I study the bible,  the more I realise just how important Baptism in water is, and how much christians have been robbed in being deceived that  baby or infant dedication is a replacement for baptism.

The bible teaches us that we must Repent and be baptised. A baby or an infant and even a young child is incapable of recognising right from wrong in their lives and is therefore not able to repent. According to criminal law, a child only starts to be able to recognise right from wrong to a limited degree form the age of seven years and up. From the age of about 13 years and older the child is able to recognise right from wrong to a greater degree but the law still does not hold a child fully accountable till after the teens.

This Child can not Repent.

This Child can not Repent.

If you were baptised as an infant, that is great, but due to the fact that you have not repented and been able to die to your former self and rise up a new creation through Christ Jesus in the act of water baptism, you still carry your old sinful nature around with you and you need to break free from that old nature and become a new creation.

Baptism as it should be. An Adult who can Repent.

Baptism as it should be. An Adult who can Repent.

Colossians 3:3 says, "For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ Jesus." Break the tradition of infant baptism, and allow your children to be dedicated to the Lord, but know that when they have reached the age of being able to fully make their own decisions whilst realising the consequences thereof, that they will need to make a decision about accepting Christ into their lives and being Baptised in water. If you were baptised as an infant, you also need to break free from the tradition of infant baptism and repent and be baptised in water for the remission of your sins, that your former sinful self, may be hidden in Christ Jesus.

God Bless.

Regeneration

What is the Biblical Regeneration.

Titus 3:5

"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit".

Paul talks about the washing of regeneration in this scripture. Regeneration as defined basically means the recreation or renewing of something. So when Paul talks about the washing of the regeneration, I can only assume that he in fact talks all about the whole process of baptism in water.

Through the Baptism in water, we become a new creation. We die to our former self, through Christ Jesus, and we rise up a new creation in the likeness of Jesus, through His death and resurrection. In the baptism in water, we get regenerated through the power of Christ. We become a new creation. We are made new through Christ. We were all born perfect in the likeness of God, but as we go through life, that perfection is lost due to our bowing down to the wiles of the devil. We become moulded into the world. Romans 12:2 says we are not to be conformed to this world but be transformed through the renewing of our minds. However, before we get to know and serve Christ, we are conformed (moulded into) to the ways of the world and lose some of the perfection in which we were created.

In verse 3 of Titus 3, Paul states how we were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. Then in verse 4, he states that when the kindness and the love of God our Saviour appeared towards man, which is Christ Jesus, he came and saved us and caused us to be made new through the washing of regeneration.

Paul then adds "and renewing of the Holy Spirit". When Jesus was baptized in water by John the Baptist, as He came out of the water, the Spirit of God descended like a dove and alighted upon Him (Matthew 3:16). Through the baptism in water, Jesus himself received the Spirit of God upon Him, and when we go through the baptism in water, we receive a new spirit into ourselves which is the Holy Spirit

It is through the regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, that we are transformed from the old sinful person as described in Titus 3:3, to a new creation that is filled with the 9 Fruits of the Spirit (Galations 5:22), which are love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

We can not achieve the fulness of these fruits without first being made a new creation, by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour and through the baptism of water, by which we receive regeneration and a renewing of the Holy Spirit that is within us.

Once we have grasped the full concept of regeneration of our bodies through Christ Jesus and do not doubt in the work which Jesus has done within us, we will realise that old things have passed away and all things become new. Our bodies become a new creation and old problems with our bodies are removed. We have to renew our minds through the renewing of the spirit and start to believe that through Christ, that has set us free, and through the regeneration of our physical bodies, we have been set free from sickness, we are set free from obesity, we are set free from ill health and our bodies have become brand new.

We are set free from sin and lusts and all the bad as described in Titus 3:3, through the renewing of our minds, and these former bad traits are replaced with the Fruits of the Spirit.

Walk, therefore, as a new creation in Christ, set free from the old body and mind, with a new perfect body and a new mind.

God Bless
